Mac and Cody had spent the time with Lisa who boards Dogs. Thank you so much for looking after them.
A visit to MacDonald’s for breakfast and some free internet :-) then a leisurely stroll around Hounslow (where Heather found herself a nice small purple trollybag for all the souvenirs - Paul.), then off to the airport by train. Paul left from terminal 5 and heads for Frankfurt, then Singapore then Sydney to arrive Monday morning around 7am. I leave from terminal 3 onto Helsinki, Bangkok arriving at Sydney around 6:30 on Monday morning.
Another BA plane, an Airbus A320, this time.

At Frankfurt I had a wait of almost 4 hours. A lady passenger who was looking lost asked me for directions. I was not much help so we set off to find the gate we would be leaving from. One that was found Susan, we had introduced ourselves by now, and I went for a bite to eat. there was a nice little restaurant where we had a light snack and a German beer. Our waitress, an attractive German lass decided what beers we should try, taught us some basic German and kept us entertained.

Susan was on her way to visit her mother who resided in Christchurch New Zealand. We agreed to meet up at Singapore and boarded our Qantas Boeing 747-400 for our second leg.
London – not as cold as the Midlands but with many more people. Tube is efficient and should defiantly be implemented in Sydney. Sardines are not bad if only conducted for 5 mins at a time.

The Tower of London and Tower Bridge – blue and ornamental. Unfortunately the cost of entry was too much for the Scottish / Midland heritage would permit us to pay. Being daylight robbery I was wondering whether the operators should be locked up.

We did however walk to The Monument which is to the Great Fire of London in 1666, where it began in a Baker’s shop in Pudding Lane. I got half way up and realized that I did not appreciate heights. Paul made it all the way up and took some photos of “London through Chicken Wire” for pigeon defence.

We walked through Covent Garden, Soho and Oxford Circus. The dance shops show 10% off for dance students. Bloch was prominent on a street corner being proudly Australian. There were many shows on offer and had we not been passing through, might have contemplated attending one. The Christmas lights were on and the shops were open.

After walking since 10am and not bothering with lunch etc, we were slightly damp when we got to Garfunkel’s in Oxford Street. http://www.garfunkels.co.uk Highly recommended and enjoyable time. Paul decided he would have a Becks beer. The waitress however was mortified as only the non alcoholic version of the beer was available. She refused to give him a Becks. A London Pride was supplied instead. According to Paul it definitely puts hair on the chest.

Peak hour on the tube was an experience. Crushed for short periods of time.

Bletchely Park was definitely worth visiting however as always, time was too short. We attended an hour and a half tour of the site with one of the best guides I’ve had. She was knowledgeable, friendly and easy to listen to. Bletchley House was definitely a treat as the mansion had been bought and owned by Sir Hugh (Sammy and Fanny Leon) and then added on after each of their holidays. Roman wing, Italian, Germanic, Gothic. Each wing entirely different.

The park itself was fascinating and the way the war effort was progressed was clearly outlined. The re-construction of the Enigma and the Colossus machines were demonstrated by a gentleman known as Graham.
We were definitely unwilling to leave at the end of the day and head to London. It was a 2 and a half hour, 60 mile, drive to London in traffic. It was still better than Sydney traffic. We arrived finally at Hounslow to stay in an Etap hotel. Finally locating a park (as the hotel car park was bolted) we booked and were advised where to park. Just as far away as where we had parked which charged for parking. We were almost locked in for the evening as well. If Paul had a saw, he would have cut through the boom gates, since all we needed to do was drop our luggage at the hotel and then return the hire car. In all, the only issue with the ETap hotel was the disinterested staff which really do not do the hotel credit.
The museum was definitely a treat, set up as a town in the early 1900s complete with people dressed in the time, transport, shops, school and industry We toured the mine. I don’t know how the miners worked in such conditions. The pit ponies definitely had a mind of their own. It is good to see that the owner of the Dudley mine refused to leave the pit ponies down the end of the mine at the end of the day.

Whittington is quite an upmarket village and the canal has many barges. Whilst walking along the canal we were greeted and followed by a most friendly duck who swam along the path we were walking to keep us company. I was chastised when I walked too far ahead of the duck. In the end, I walked with the duck so to speak along the canal whilst Paul was ahead and enjoying the view of railway line and Midlands express which frequently passed.

Whilst in Whittington we took a look at the outside of 8 Babbington Close where Paul resided for the first 6 years of his life and primary school, now an education advancement centre.

We were also approached by a local dog walking his owner. The dog was so happy to see us he refused to let us pass until we had appropriately greeted and paid him attention. The English really do appreciate their dogs. In the whole time we have been in the UK, I’ve only heard two dogs bark. One playing in the park, and the other was an adolescent overcome by exuberance at being walked. Shops permit dogs and there are signs for owners to carry their canine companions up and down escalators.

Leaving Whittington we returned to Lichfield for the Lichfield Cathedral and saw the Lichfield angel with its vast history and the resting pace of St Chad.
The Sleeping Children

The sculpture is of two children who both died 1 year apart the daughters of the Reverend William Robinson, who died prior of tuberculosis and Ellen-Jane Robinson. The eldest also named Ellen-Jane in 1813, died from the complications of burns when her nightdress caught fire while she was preparing for bed. her sister sickened and died in London in 1814. Francis Chantrey was commissioned by their mother and the sculpture was installed in the South- East corner of the Lichfield Cathedral in 1817 and remains there to this day.

In 1826 the poet, William Lisle Bowles wrote a poem about the sculpture:

Look at those sleeping children; softly tread,

Lest thou do mar their dream, and come not nigh

Till their fond mother, with a kiss, shall cry,

'Tis morn, awake! awake! Ah! they are dead!

Yet folded in each other's arms they lie,

So still--oh, look! so still and smilingly,

So breathing and so beautiful, they seem,

As if to die in youth were but to dream

Of spring and flowers! Of flowers? Yet nearer stand

There is a lily in one little hand,

Broken, but not faded yet,

As if its cup with tears were wet.

So sleeps that child, not faded, though in death,

And seeming still to hear her sister's breath,

As when she first did lay her head to rest

Gently on that sister's breast,

And kissed her ere she fell asleep!

The archangel's trump alone shall wake that slumber deep.

Take up those flowers that fell

From the dead hand, and sigh a long farewell!

Your spirits rest in bliss!

Yet ere with parting prayers we say,

Farewell for ever to the insensate clay,

Poor maid, those pale lips we will kiss!

Ah! 'tis cold marble! Artist, who hast wrought

This work of nature, feeling, and of thought;

Thine, Chantrey, be the fame

That joins to immortality thy name.

For these sweet children that so sculptured rest

A sister's head upon a sister's breast

Age after age shall pass away,

Nor shall their beauty fade, their forms decay.

For here is no corruption; the cold worm

Can never prey upon that beauteous form:

This smile of death that fades not, shall engage

The deep affections of each distant age!

Mothers, till ruin the round world hath rent,

Shall gaze with tears upon the monument!

And fathers sigh, with half-suspended breath:

How sweetly sleep the innocent in death!

From there we sent onto wall (Letocetum – Roman for Wall) having the ruins of the bath house and hotel for travellers. It was a greatly appreciated opportunity to see the ruins and streets. Wall was the interception of the three main Roman roads built across England. It gave pause for thought to think that we were travelling on roads to Wall that belong to the Roman age. We booked in at the Station Hotel in Dudley which had a rather attractive bed and breakfast package only to find when we arrived there that it was rather well known in the UK as being haunted. I have no idea of the history of the haunting and intend to find out after we leave the hotel. As far as I know no respects were paid to us by the resident spirit (s) for the two nights we were there, unless it was the snoring which we heard from the next room and the creaking of the floors in the late evening and early morning. The hotel itself was faded and the room was a look into the glory days gone by. The shower was definitely interesting as hot and cold temperatures appeared to optional extras at the whim of the pipes and this also included the water.
Building was commenced in around 1200 and has been extended in 3 stages over the next 500 years and occupied by Kings until it was ordered desecrated by royalty in 1700’s in order to keep out the Welsh. Talk about the bill for renovation. Well worth seeing the ruins which are remarkably in tact. The strange thing was that while the castle was destroyed the Gate House next to it was not and has kept farmers graziers comfortably homed for the next 300 years. The manor house is currently occupied however it was open on the day we visited and contained displays of the visit of Queen Victoria, the Earl of Leicester and the untimely death of his wife including original documents.

The gardens have been restored if not the castle and they are really lovely. A shame we are not seeing them in spring or summer. We have plenty of pictures for mum of the knot garden created by the Earl of Leicester for Queen Victoria and her privy garden.

The tapestries, beddings and curtains are original and the fabrics are in remarkable tact. Green seems to have been the colour in the Victorian age. The lady of the house generally appears to be the one who tapestries the curtain. We also found out that the reason for the small windows in the castle was to keep the castle warm. No double glazing).

Following the castle ruins, we went to Warwick to see an functioning castle. It turned out in fact to be a version of Disneyland. At least the money will assist with the upkeep. We were there rather late and so only walked around the outside.

Whilst in Warwick we also visited the museum of the local regiment, the Warwickshire Yeoman, the Teddy Bear Lancers. Information of this regiment has only recently been gathered with World War II gentlemen now in their eighties. A large amount of memorabilia, uniforms and historical accounts have been gathered. They were certainly a force to be reckoned with from the Boer War to today.

Two things of note for me in Warwick were the air raid shelter and the public lavatories. The first rather speaks for itself as it appears to be rather forgotten and neglected. It was well built for the speed at which it would have needed to be constructed to protect families and loved ones etc.

As for the hand washing system in the public lavatories, you had to push a button for soap, one for water and one for hot air. They were not in order however and a kindly American lady happily demonstrated the facility as she herself had dried soap on her hands before finding the water button which enthusiastically splashed you with water rather than your hands.

All Hallow’s Eve seems to be a notable event in England as everywhere we went we saw families dressed up in various costumes from the very early morning. As one person stated, this has occurred only recently with American influence.

Being All Hallow’s Eve, we arrived late in the evening at our accommodation at Shenstone, near Lichfield only to find they had no record of us and their internet system was down.
We did our laundry at the local launderette, had a great chat with the girl who worked there and also had a brief wander around Kenilworth. We found the allotments. There was about a mile of worth of garden plots, greenhouses and sheds. This would really be worth seeing in spring, as these were being harvested and prepared for the next veggie seasons. In the background was a windmill and we are planning to take a closer look.
His house in uniquely Tudor. We also toured quite a number of the houses of his family and went to their burial place at the local Holy Trinity church. The geese were great.

The houses comprised Shakespeare’s son-in-law – John Hall who was the first doctor to write case notes and published. (Only of the patients who lived). Very opulent by Tudor standards. The house is now having problems with borer beetles and needed half a million pounds to restore. They need to locate suitable timber 300 years old and in the correct lengths. At the same time they shall replace the wattle and daube with authentic materials including, straw and dung. We did get into conversation with one of the volunteers, a Scottish gentleman (Alistair) who advised that the church are still looking for any Shakespeare’s relatives as they are beholden to contribute to the upkeep of the church etc. as part of the estate from Shakespeare and Dr Hall.
……., you will be interested to know that we saw a Tudor Knot garden. Unfortunately autumn is not the best time to see it but it was beautiful. We also saw holly in bloom. I do think the native flowers in the UK blossom in their cottage gardens better than in Australia.
After two days I have managed to completely confuse the GPS. We are heading to Lichfield tomorrow (40 minutes away) and will see Kenilworth castle (ruins) and Warwick castle (a modern, working castle) on the way. I am hoping we don’t end up at Dover.
I met up with Paul in Heathrow and collected the hire car. Paul was given a GPS for the trip so with directions from two reliable sources, we circled Heathrow twice in an effort to leave and made for Windsor in order to give our respects to the Queen. It was rather late when we arrived so we only walked around the outside of the castle and grounds. These were amazing.

The only way to describe Windsor is as a tourist trap. By the way, small street signs are half way down the streets. It does seem strange to drive on cobblestones. We got lost and found a replica of the Queens steam engine so we are keeping an eye out for steam trains for dad. We are planning to go to Trent Valley Railway this week.

Having been in the UK for only 3 hours, I was amazed to see one England’s exotic animals - a squirrel. They are lively and very cute little creatures.

We travelled about a fifth of the length of England in an hour and a half and stayed my first night in the UK outside of Coventry in a small suburb called Kenilworth. It’s rather like holidaying in Abermain.
It didn’t take me long to clear Customs as it appears I was the only person not travelling on a UK/EU passport. I found a young lady who looked at my passport took my entry card and through to baggage claim, then walked though an empty Customs hall and out. I checked my Mobile Phone and found it still didn’t work. Off to the underground to buy an Oyster Card, a quick trip to Houndslow to the Etap Hotel, http://www.etaphotel.com a chain known for cheap, clean no-frills rooms, staffed by overworked, disinterested staff. I was told my room would not be ready until 10:00am so I watched the BBC read The Daily Telegraph, sent Heather and Issy, our friend who kindly to be cat sitter, an email. At 10am the staff had changed and I was informed my room would not be ready until 12 noon, but I could use the Luggage Room. I went for a 2 hour explore of Houndslow and had lunch at MacDonald’s (a Big Tasty) back to the hotel, checked in and had a very welcome shower and change of clothes. Suffering little Jet-lag I decide to go into London.

Heather is on her way to attend a seminar in Budapest as part of her work. Once the seminar is over we will meet up in London and spend some time touring the UK.

It was not possible for Heather and I to travel together as her tickets were booked by the client and mine were purchased using Heather's Frequent Flier points.

Off to the airport and flying British Airways to Heathrow, via Singapore. The flight was great, the service excellent, food was quite palatable with a glass of red wine and I had three seats to myself.
The only hiccup was the discovery of a lack of Mobile Phone International Roaming during the first leg stop in Singapore, thank you Optus for turning it off. This could of presented problems if either one of us needed to contact the other.

I managed some sleep on the Singapore to Heathrow leg and had the company of a couple who had visited their son and daughter-in- law in Broome QLD.

Heather - Monday 26 Oct 2009. Budapest is an absolutely beautiful city, made up of two separate cities on each side of the river – Buda and Pest. I stayed in the Marriot hotel (on the Pest side – no comments thanks Adam) and had a splendid view looking the Danube and the palace on the other side of the river (the Buda side).

The buildings are tall and limestone in the city. There are people everywhere. I went into the Hungarian office straight after arriving to get some work done so I could then start to enjoy the visit. I left my mobile in the taxi and was promptly advised that if something is dropped, it is lost forever. The taxi driver did however return my mobile. The manager I visited in the office did exactly the same thing that night on the way to the dinner with the sponsor. Nothing like starting a trend.Paul Anslowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09103002163224397737noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4585446470458793227.post-26522550202375260122009-09-22T19:30:00.001+10:002009-12-24T22:12:33.862+11:00Our Homepage is located at www.anslow.netPaul Anslowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09103002163224397737noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4585446470458793227.post-15556941220784683272009-08-26T22:00:00.003+10:002010-01-09T17:02:02.890+11:00Cameraware

Just bought Snug-it Camera protection, which comes in the form of a silicone rubber Jacket. Not fetishware for cameras :-) Will help to protect my D90 whilst (hopefully) travelling OS in October.

On my UK trip the Delkin Devices Snug-it Pro camera protection did its job very well. I generally wore my camera over my neck and across my shoulder, the camera riding just above hip level, using the PACsafe CarrySafe 100 Anti Theft Camera neck strap. I believe that the silicon rubber jacket did an excellent job of protecting my D90 against minor knocks and scrapes. The Neck strap is reinforced with stainless steel wire, but is extremely comfortable when worn over the shoulder.
